The Jackson Township Board of Fire Commissioners District 3 voted unanimously at their regular business meeting held on December 16, 2013 to rescind their recognition of a petition establishing a second fire company within the district. The petition was accepted at the Board's October 21, 2013 meeting.
Company No. 1 Station 55 has successfully provided fire suppression and emergency response services to the residents of Jackson for over 60 years. The Board's acceptance of the petition was strongly contested by Fire Company No. 1 members as an unnecessary duplication of services -- a sentiment supported by numerous other fire companies inside and outside of Jackson as well as a number of taxpayers attending each recent meeting.
"We are pleased that this matter has been resolved on behalf of the taxpayers and firefighters in Jackson," stated Chief Mike Waters. "The Board agreed with us that it was in the best interest of all concerned to end this contentious matter. We have always been focused on effective and efficient fire protection and the residents of District 3 can continue to count on Station 55 to provide excellent fire service" concluded Waters.
President of Station 55, Lee Friedland, expresses his gratitude to the public, adding, “The overwhelming support from the taxpayers of District 3 helped us send our message. We look forward to continuing to serve Jackson, providing valuable information through our Fightfor55 website and twitter page.
